This is not simply resistance to technology. In many projects, 2D drawings remain practical and familiar.

The latest evidence supports this mixed reality. NBS’s Digital Construction Report 2025 found that BIM adoption remains at about seven in ten professionals, while one in three now associates BIM with BS EN ISO 19650 standards. Yet BIM adoption has not eliminated drawings. Recent research estimates that converting BIM information into conventional 2D drawings can require 41% additional effort, demonstrating that drawings remain an important project deliverable.

Why do construction teams still rely on them?

1. Drawings communicate construction intent quickly

A well-structured plan, elevation or section can communicate what a worker needs without navigating through a model. Dimensions, levels, notes, tags and references are arranged on a familiar sheet.

On a busy site, that simplicity matters. A foreman checking a wall location may need one detail, not an entire federated model. 2D drawings reduce the cognitive load involved in finding task-specific information.

2. They fit established approval and contractual workflows

Construction involves permits, tender packages, shop drawings, RFIs, inspections and record documentation. Many workflows still rely on drawing sheets, revision numbers and formal issue procedures.

Even where BIM is used for design, authorities, consultants, contractors or clients may still request PDFs or plotted drawings for approval. Research into automated 2D drawing generation notes that government agencies can continue to require 2D documentation for permitting, while site personnel may remain more familiar with traditional drawings.

The result is often BIM plus drawings.

3. Site conditions favour portable information

Construction environments are not always ideal for model-based workflows. Connectivity can be inconsistent, devices may be shared, screens can be difficult to read outdoors, and workers may need information while moving between locations.

A drawing on a tablet—or even a printed sheet—can be opened immediately. For field tasks, that accessibility can outweigh a rich model.

This helps explain why digital transformation remains uneven. Deloitte’s 2026 State of Digital Adoption in Construction report, covering 954 construction and engineering businesses across many countries like Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and so on, found that only 16% had reached advanced digital capability. Nearly one in four still depended mainly on paper-based workflows, while less than half provided on-site teams with access to real-time project information.

4. 2D drawings remain effective for detailing

BIM excels at coordinating information-rich building elements, detecting clashes and maintaining relationships between objects. But construction documentation still requires carefully composed views.

A wall section, reflected ceiling plan, door schedule or enlarged detail is designed around human interpretation. Line weights, hatching and annotation hierarchy make specific information immediately readable.

In other words, BIM may contain the information, but the drawing often determines how efficiently people consume it.

5. Existing projects are rarely fully digital

Renovation, refurbishment and as-built projects create another reason for CAD use. Owners may have decades of legacy drawings in DWG, DXF, PDF or scanned formats. Rebuilding every historical asset into BIM is not always justified.

A practical workflow may combine legacy CAD, new drawings, point clouds, surveys and BIM models. CAD remains valuable as an interoperability layer between old documentation and newer digital workflows.

6. Skills, cost and project scale still matter

Adopting technology involves more than selecting and deploying software. Smaller contractors may not have BIM specialists, hardware budgets or time to redesign established processes.

NSW Government research published in 2025 found that 57% of surveyed Class 2 builders and 48% of designers were still at a basic stage of digitalisation. Cost was the biggest barrier, with 67% citing software and licence costs and 57% hardware costs.

For a small project, a disciplined CAD workflow can remain proportionate to the need.

The real opportunity: connect 2D and BIM

The question should not be whether construction teams should abandon 2D drawings. A better question is how drawings and models can complement each other without creating duplicate work.

Modern CAD Services can support this connection by maintaining accurate drawing standards, structured layers, consistent annotation and revision control while integrating outputs with BIM workflows. can similarly turn design information into coordinated plans, elevations, sections, details and documentation packages that remain usable for contractors and consultants.

The bigger shift is toward a model-to-document workflow: create reliable information once, coordinate it digitally, and generate drawings required for construction, approval and handover.

Autodesk’s 2025 construction research found that digital leaders are increasingly combining automation and AI with established workflows. Deloitte’s 2026 findings similarly emphasise interoperability, workforce capability and real-time data access as critical gaps.

2D CAD is not disappearing. Its role is changing.

Strong construction workflows will not necessarily eliminate drawings. They will be those that understand when a model is the right source of truth, when a drawing is the right communication format, and how to keep both aligned.

The future may be less about choosing CAD or BIM—and more about ensuring every drawing and model carries the right information, to the right person, at the right stage.

For all the momentum behind BIM, digital twins, AI and connected project data, 2D drawings remain a daily working language on construction sites.
